Bag Lady by Erykah Badu is an old school go-to song for me. It has many levels of meaning. Badu not only addresses our past experiences weighing us down, but, physical possessions as well.
Most meaningful to me is her refrain, “All you must hold on to is you.”
It was a reality check for me. It began a process of eliminating the extra emotional baggage that I needed to let go. As I did, it was such a freedom.
I make it a habit of packing light. When Badu sings about “Missing your bus carrying around all that stuff.” I correlate that to opportunities in life. If you live in the past, you aren’t appreciating the present, or open to the future.
Today I am thankful
- I have no idea why I woke up at 3 in the morning to write. But, here I am.
- Learning my Mac has proven to be a worthy opponent.
- I get time with family this weekend. There is nothing better.
Bag Lady is a woman’s issues song. As the song goes on, the call goes out to many women — baby bags, nickel bags, Gucci bags, garbage bags — powerful call to action that never ages.
And to think it all started with Ms Badu reaching in her bag back in the day of “You better call Tyrone.”
