Gratitude 3June14 Choosing Your Path

Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”  The Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” Alice: “I don’t much care where. The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.” Alice: “So long as I get somewhere.” The Cheshire Cat: “Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.” Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

so is lifeI have always liked the above exchange between Alice and the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. It speaks to me in several ways. First, the times in my life when I was living without any true direction. Living day-to-day, doing what had to be done, what was expected of me. Living life without any true intent — just living. Second, how true I have learned that if you just keep going, you will end up somewhere. Maybe it’s living a life that is not exceptional, but mediocre. Not quite the life you intended, yet, you are living just the same.

The lesson for me in that exchange is the importance of dreaming, striving, and making goals. Not leaving it up to fate to decide that “somewhere” you will be if you walk long enough. But, striving for what you want out of your life. As an avid walker, it takes energy to walk. Make those steps count, don’t just go aimless through life. It is true of this life — we are guaranteed two things. We are born and we will die. What we do with our in-between is on us. I am in that process. It is never too late to take a different path. To decide different choices of where to go from here. The choice of how you get through life is yours.

Today I am thankful for ..

  • 29 years ago today I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Jazmine Pearl. Will you still be my daughter? Yes. I will always, forever and always, be your daughter.
  • A busy day ahead of appointments
  • Time with my Dad — challenging times
  • The sounds of life outside my window

At some point you may see someone without a smile today. Pay it forward and give them yours.

affectionately yours, Laura
