Gratitude 25Oct13 Pennies from Heaven

While out walking today, I was thinking of someone I miss a lot. I began to think of all of the fun we had together. I reminisced on the life lessons I learned through our friendship. I thought to myself “I hope you know just how much I still love you.

As I turned onto my street, I looked down and shined brightly in the sun was a penny. A deep belly laugh echoed through me. I looked up to heaven and said “Thank you.” It was my penny from a heaven moment.

I have a crystal box on my dresser that holds coins and small trinkets I have found over the years. Every now and again, I go through it. I can’t seem to part with any of the contents. Somehow, each treasure seems lucky. Superstitious? Probably.

When I was little, my Granny told me a story that when you are missing someone who has gone to heaven, an angel sends down a penny for you to find. It was the angel’s way of letting you know they are thinking of you, too. She never said pass up a penny you find.

Greek mythology believed that a cooper had special properties because it is one of the oldest metals to be used by man. Cooper was believed to ward off evil spirits and attract love. The United States government, originally made the penny out of cooper simply because of the low cost and weight factor. Not much mystery or fantasy in that.

I chose to believe my Granny and hold that story near and dear to my heart. I keep my crystal box filled with pennies, just in case.

Today I am thankful ..

  • Good memories bring comfort.
  • A cup of Teavana tea.
  • My body feels great!
  • Wishing you all a great weekend. Take the time out for yourself.

Gratitude 24Oct13 Chose Your Battles Wisely

Not all battles are worth fighting. You have to weigh out the importance of the challenge presented. There are many factors to be considered. The source of the contention and the intent primarily. Resolution is a two-way street. Both sides have to be invested in the quality of the outcome.

I recently wrote about the book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. One of the agreements is to not to take things personally. Unhappy people act out in ways that have nothing to do with you. Their actions often show a growing individual making their way through life’s obstacles. Their actions say much more about them than you. Your accountability is in your response.

Lately, for me, some battles are not worth fighting. Sometimes it is best to walk away and allow people space to grow. It does not make anyone the good person or bad person. It just is.

Today I am thankful for ..

  • 11,171 steps
  • A wonderful conversation with my bestie
  • My grandson is 14 today – amazing!
  • A bitter-sweet day on the 2nd anniversary of the end of Mama’s life journey.

Find the calm within. Don’t let the storms around you bring you down. Chose wisely.

Gratitude 23Oct13 Learning is Growing

Tonight I helped my grandson with his 8th grade science homework. The assignment was centered around the symbol Fe (iron) from the periodic table. It was quite a task that involved compounds, history, and pictures. At one point, he asked me “What is it, Gram?” and I shook my head responding “I don’t have a clue!” Rather embarrassing as I grabbed my laptop and began a Google search on the symbol Fe. I now know much more about iron and it’s symbol!

What my grandson has accomplished and is now learning in the 8th grade, I learned in high school. Mind-boggling, really, the knowledge and technical skills our youth have today. I remember being told “You have to finish high school. without your high school diploma, you will never get a good job.” I in turn, told my children “You have to finish college. without a college degree, you will never get a good job.” I can only imagine my grandchildren will need specialized training or a masters to compete in the world.

Today I am thankful for ..

  • The opportunity to help my grandson
  • Good shows are on tonight
  • My craft projects

Never pass up an opportunity to pay it forward. Life is a boomerang. what you send out; will return.

Gratitude 21Oct13 Our Greatest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel unsure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. As we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.  Marianne Williamson

Today I am thankful for ..

Gratitude 19Oct13 Memories

Sometimes old memories come back to haunt me. I have to remind myself not to get too comfortable as they replay in my mind. Metaphorically speaking, I have to resist the urge to grab some popcorn and cozy up with my blanket to watch the drama of my life play on the big screen in my brain.

There is nothing we can do about our past. Trust me, I have tried. I was recently told that I carry so much baggage around with me that I couldn’t afford to fly anymore. I have always been of the mind-set that all the lessons of my past, make me who I am today. While that is true, the piece of that I have now added is only taking that positive with me and leaving the negative behind.

Today I am thankful for ..

  • A Marilyn Monroe movie marathon
  • New habits
  • Finally am in the 25 BMI range
  • My trusty blanket

Wishing you a snuggle up kinda’ day.

Gratitude 17Oct13 Racism, Alive and Well

While out walking, a group of what appeared to be teenage boys, drove by me and shouted “nigger lover” at me. At the time I was listening to a Joel Osteen podcast. So, feeling extra christian. I said a quick prayer “Father, forgive those ignorant asses. And my swearing. I am working on it. I promise.”

Since my youth I have been blessed to be part of a family, who, happen to be black. Sadly, I have been sliced with that particular epithet more times than I can count. Well, that and crazy bitch which comes in a close second. Another blog, for another day. Not giving it much more thought, I went back to my place of joy of enjoying the sun, walking and listening to the podcast.

A while later, I reached up to adjust my brim and revelation swept through me. I was wearing my Obama 2012 baseball cap. Racism, alive and well in America. I said a prayer for the safety of our president and those who protect him. How incredibly sad that a group of our future generation, thought in those terms and were comfortable to shout it out. Racism isn’t innate; it is taught.

Today I am thankful for ..

  • I have increased my writing time
  •  Our government is back up and running
  • My coco caramel sea salt tea

Chances are you will encounter someone who is different than you today. The difference many be as obvious as skin color or as personal as political affiliation. Pay it forward with kindness.

Gratitude 16Oct13 Life in a Fishbowl

One of the things I am working hard to change is to stop talking about people. Every time I do, it turns out badly. A big lesson learned is, if someone will gossip with you, they will gossip about you.

I believe we are all intrigued about what goes on in other people’s lives. There is a very fine line between wondering how someone is and wondering how someone is. With that said, not all gossip is bad. Gossip is a means of bonding with each other. It is the sharing of information and opinion when it is understood as that. That fine line is often crossed with the sharing of personal information that was not meant to be shared or unkind in content.

I am guilty of being a follower of celebrity gossip. I often have my face pressed against that fishbowl that Kenny Chesney sings about. I have posted a part of the lyrics below. Whether you are a celebrity or just every day folk, gossip is always intriguing until you are the topic of the conversation. It’s a different view looking out of the fishbowl than looking in. When it comes to family and friends, I have become much more sensitive about the information I pass along.

Everybody’s life is on display
It’s gotten out of control
Tell me do you feel exposed?
Well, welcome to the fishbowl

Today I am thankful for ..

  • Prioritizing what is important in my life
  • Learning tools to make good choices
  • My fall decorations I have around my home
  • I am still enjoying my pumpkin latte creamer
  • A Santi day is always a good day

At some point today you may pass someone without a smile. It doesn’t cost a thing to share yours. Pay it forward.
